On May 7, PinPlay reported that, according to Engadget, Google is building a team to establish back-end services for blockchain developers. The company hopes to make Google Cloud the main destination for those who want to run Web3 applications.
"We don't want to be a part of the cryptocurrency wave directly," said Amit Zavery, vice president of Google Cloud. "We just provide technical support to enable enterprises to use and utilize the distributed nature of Web3 in their current business.".
Zavery told employees in an email that the Web3 market has shown great potential, and many customers asked us to increase support for Web3 and cryptocurrency related technologies.
This is not the first time Google has entered this field. In January this year, Google announced the establishment of a digital asset team and said that it would study how to let Google Cloud customers make and receive cryptocurrency payments. In the following month's earnings conference call, Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai said that the cloud computing department was exploring support for blockchain projects.
Zavery said that the new team will be composed of employees who participate in the Web3 project at Google. He said that Google might create a system to enable other companies to make it easy for people to query blockchain data. Zavery said that Google's tools will be compatible with other platforms such as Amazon Web Services.
Google's thinking seems to run counter to Web3's vision. A core goal of the Web3 concept is to decentralize the network and transfer power from Google, Amazon, Meta and other large companies. However, Web3 developers need to host their applications and services somewhere, and Google wants to be their first choice.
