In the last tutorial, we installed a WordPress site. As we all know, one of the important reasons why WordPress is so popular is its powerful theme and plug-in mechanism. Flexible theme switching can make 10000 websites have 10000 different appearances, and rich plug-in resources can expand the functions of the site infinitely. This time, let's get familiar with WordPress theme management. Once you are familiar with the operation of theme management, you can choose a suitable theme according to your own projects and ideas, which will lay a good foundation for future design. Please note that the main purpose of this tutorial is to become familiar with the operation methods of theme management. The topics involved in this tutorial are not recommended for website building. We will introduce the use of excellent topics that are really suitable for website construction, such as Avada, Divi and other topics in special tutorials.
1、 Theme installation method A: add online in the background
In the 5.9.2 version of WordPress, after the installation is completed, three themes have been installed by default: Twenty Twenty Two (that is, 2022; the title has not been translated into Chinese in the official language pack when the author sent the article), 2021, and 2020. The theme enabled by default is Twenty Twenty Two. So, let's install the theme called 219 online. Log in to WordPress management background, click "Theme" menu under "Appearance", click "Install Theme" or "Add New Theme". Then, enter "2019" in the search box on the new page to search for a topic named "219". Hold the mouse over the theme thumbnail to see the "Install" button, and click it. After installation, click the "Theme" menu on the left again to see the newly installed theme.
2、 Theme installation method B: background upload and add
Most of the time, the themes we use do not exist in the official theme repository of WordPress, but are offline compressed packages obtained through other channels. For example, Avada, Divi and other themes cannot be installed online through the official WordPress theme repository. Here, let's assume that we have obtained the offline compressed package "twinyninetee. zip" for the theme "219". Or click the "Theme" menu under "Appearance", and then click "Install Theme" or "Add New Theme". Then, click "Upload Theme" in the new page, click "Select File", select the theme zip package you obtained in advance, and then click "Install Now". After installation, click the "Theme" menu on the left again to see the newly installed theme.
3、 Theme installation method C: bypass background upload
Sometimes, because of the PHP settings, adding themes through WordPress management background upload will fail. If you don't want to adjust PHP settings, you don't need to upload in the background. In fact, install and add WordPress Theme Essentially, it is the process of downloading the compressed package of a theme to the specified directory on the site and then decompressing it. Therefore, no matter what way we use, we can only achieve this goal. Take the offline compressed package "twinyninetee. zip" with the theme of "219" as an example. If it is an online environment, we just need to upload "twinyninetee. zip" to the "wp content themes" directory under the site through SSH, FTP and other client tools, and then decompress it. Of course, you can directly copy and decompress in the local environment. The directory hierarchy after decompressing is shown in the following figure. After completion, click the "Theme" menu on the left again to see the newly installed theme.
4、 Enable theme
In the "Appearance" - "Theme" menu of WordPress background management, we can see all the themes we have installed. Hold the mouse over the thumbnail of the theme you want to enable, and click the "Start" button.
5、 Topic deletion
For topics that are no longer used, we can choose to keep them instead of enabling them, or we can choose to delete them completely. Of course, it is recommended to keep a backup before deleting. Similarly, under the "Appearance" - "Theme" menu of WordPress background management, hover the mouse over the thumbnail of the theme you want to delete, and click the "Theme Details" button. In the newly opened page, click "Delete".
Well, the above are some operations of WordPess theme management, mainly including installation, enabling and deletion. The main purpose of this tutorial is to introduce the operation method, not to recommend the theme. The theme involved in the article is not recommended to build a website, so please don't misunderstand! Of course, themes and plug-ins, as the peerless twin pride in the WordPress ecosystem, can't introduce plug-ins without introducing themes. So, in the next tutorial, let's talk about the management of WordPress plug-ins. Don't miss it!
