At 18:30 p.m. on September 21, 2021 (Beijing time), the 52nd meeting of the Standing Committee of the United Nations Convention on the Protection of Migratory Species of Wild Animals was held on time. As a CMS partner organization, representatives of the International Department of the Green Club attended on time. The main contents of the conference are summarized as follows to share with readers.
At the opening ceremony, Soumitra Dasgupta, the president of the conference, made a speech to introduce the main contents of the conference and announced the official opening of the conference. The conference focused on a series of achievements since the signing of the Convention on the Protection of Migratory Species of Wild Animals. How to further work. How do the Convention on the Protection of Migratory Species of Wild Animals (CMS) and the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) make new adjustments under the challenge of the epidemic situation. At the same time, it also mentioned that the Convention on Biological Diversity after 2020 will achieve broad consensus.
Secretary General Amy Fraenkel said that this was the first time that the CMS Standing Committee held online. She pointed out the difficulties and challenges brought by the epidemic situation in the new museum to the protection of wildlife migration, and also pointed out that opportunities are also bred in challenges. CMS performs well under pressure. This online conference is one of them. This meeting will discuss the key issues encountered from 2020 to 2023, and also consult on the agenda to seek suggestions. At the conference, we will discuss the CMS budget expenditure and how to develop a more international reporting mechanism. The General Assembly first gave guidance on the rules of procedure, agenda and meeting arrangements, followed by a speech by the Secretary General, which described the importance of CMS work, summarized the results achieved, and proposed the focus of future work and how to work in the face of climate change and environmental threats. The scientific consultant gives priority to work, mainly focusing on wildlife migration map, protection of migratory species, wildlife diseases and migratory species, light pollution, etc.
Experts in various fields talked about aquatic species, terrestrial species and poultry species. The conference also discussed information management, strengthening exchanges and cooperation. How to build capacity, carry out 2020-2023 work and work budget were also fully discussed at the conference.
Finally, representatives of environmental non-governmental organizations from all over the world put forward their own opinions, suggestions and ideas. The CMS Expert Committee thanked the representatives for their statements and made positive responses. The meeting ended successfully and will continue to follow up.
